Networking
We discussed in class the importance of developing career networks. Networks are important for identify, developing contacts for information, advice and moral support as you pursue your goals. Kelly Pederson, a Career Services Specialist states that 75-80% of jobs are found through networks. Most people have 250 contacts in their networks. And, a referral generates 80% more results than a cold call. We discussed in class that an important part of the networking process is developing a 30 sec to one minute commercial of yourself. The commercial should contain your background information, current/prior roles and responsbilities, education and knowledge, strengths, areas of interest and goals. Please post two parts in this blog post. First, post your ideas for places that you can reach out to develop these network contacts (Religious affliations, friends, prior work situations, etc.) Second part of the post, should begin to explore your ideas for your commercial. Bring to class a hard copy of your commercial script.

The places that I would be able to reach out to in developing network contacts include the many chambers of commerce I belong to through work, month to month which provide face to face opportunities enabling me to network with hundreds of people, relationships in my personal and professional life which include a variety of politicians and business professionals, my circle of people in my local community and perhaps even the gym that I belong to.
Currently, I am a marketing and public relations director for a non-profit agency, Allies, Inc., which supports people with special needs throughout the state of New Jersey. Prior to working for Allies, I have spent over 30 years in the field of advertising spanning several forms of media including print, cable television, radio, direct mail, and working for several advertising agencies both in New York and New Jersey. My client profile extends from working with individuals such as Richard Branson, President/CEO of Virgin Atlantic to the local hardware store here in Hamilton Township New Jersey…
I would be able to make contacts in multiple venues. My first venue is through work events. I've already attended a number of events through work where I was able to meet many well established attorneys and judges. Secondly, I have made great contacts through my friends and family. Through them I have meet many people and plan on meeting many more.
I am presently a legal intern for the Personal Injury department at a law firm in Lawrenceville, NJ named Szaferman Lakind Blumstein & Blader. I am interested in pursuing a career in Corporate and/or Securities law. I am suited for a career in this field because I am presently a Major in Finance and a Minor in Economics and I hold a strong interest in the law.
I would definitely be able to create a network of contacts through my parents and their friends. My father owns his own business, and therefore has many of his own contacts who have connections to different companies and fields. I have already taken advantage of this in a few cases, getting summer jobs here and there thanks to some of these people. Also, I have spent a lot of time baby-sitting in my neighborhood, and some of the families I have met through this can provide various networking opportunities. Again, I have taken advantage of this to an extent and worked for one of my neighbors this summer at her marketing firm. I plan on continuing to create networks if and when I get an internship at MTV.
Right now, I am working on getting an internship in the PR department of MTV. I am also telecommuting for my job as Account Manager at the marketing firm, BIScorecard. I have varied experience in the Communications field, including work at the campus radio station as a DJ and as a writer/actor for a TV show on the campus television station. Hopefully, if I continue on this path, I can find myself with a great job in the future!
I have many places where I can establish networks that I can reach out to in order to help with my career. First, I can establish contacts with my family and friends of the family as well as my neighbors. I also can network with past professors and past employers. I have worked at a summer day camp for the past 8 summers where I have networked with the camp directors and many different people on staff. I currently work at a restaurant in Princeton where I have gotten to know many new people. I observe sometimes at a speech clinic where I have already begun a network of speech pathologists. Lastly, I can connect with people who belong to my temple.
I am a junior at The College of New Jersey with a communications major and a minor in Communication Disorders. I am planning on attending graduate school for Speech Pathology once I graduate in May, 2010. I have been working with children for almost 10 years, many of them who have needed speech therapy. I have been working at a summer day camp for the past 8 years with many types of children, including those with special needs. For the past 2 years I have been volunteering on campus to help mentally disabled students. I have also started observing at a speech clinic and cannot wait until I am able to actually help individuals on my own! I am very patient and caring when it comes to helping others with a skill. Also, I am always dedicated to my work!
The first place that I would reach out to develop network contacts would be my past summer job working at a golf course. The members that I met there have some great connections they have offered me in the field of advertising. A simple call to one of them and I may be able to get my foot in the door to a great company. The second place I would go to would be a few professors that I know that have been or still are involved in the marketing or advertising field. I sometimes forget that professors are a great networking utility and that they could be the exact person to talk to about getting started in the working world.
I am a Junior at the College of New Jersey working towards a degree in Communication with a minor in Marketing. I have a strong background with sports and working with people through past employment I have maintained. My goal is to work in advertising at a sports agency. My loyalty, hard work, and organization will hopefully help me reach this aspiration of mine.
My network consists of exceptionally diverse, articulate, and insightful people. I plan to obtain a challenging position using the skills acquired during my education, internships, and employments. I would like to gain further experience through Public Relations, Meeting Management and/or Marketing. Each member of my network is very valuable and will help me progress throughout my career. Throughout the years I have been consistently adding to my diverse network through educational scholars, movie producers, talent agents, talent managers, casting directors, successful businessmen, church members, prior work experience, and most importantly family/friends.
My name is Alexis Johnson I am 20 years old and currently a student at The College of New Jersey. I am a Communication Studies major with a concentration in Corporate and Organizational relations. Throughout my college career I have managed to maintain A’s and B’s while pursuing an acting career on the side. I am also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor’s Society. After college I plan to receive a Master’s degree from Princeton University, Princeton New Jersey in Political Science. I then would like to begin a career in Public Relations as well as acting. Recent projects include the Thermagear heated vest commercial, feature film Confessions of a Shopaholic, FlyCell commercial, and currently the Lifetime Television show “Mom’s Cooking”. I also enjoy persuading and leading people towards positive action. I am a very ambitious, competitive, energetic, talkative, and influential person.
Currently I can take advantage of being a student at TCNJ to build my network connections. Every so often they have career fairs and events where you can mingle with people, which is a great place to network with people. Many of my professors enjoy using their time to help students advance. As a result I can speak with my professors in hopes of exploring and expanding my potential network. Also, as I begin to go on job interviews I can try to remain in contact with those I meet in hopes that one day they can help me in the given fields.
My name is Cindy Sura and I am a senior Communication Studies major at TCNJ with a minor in Marketing and Professional Writing. A variety of projects that I have completed as an undergrad have been presented at different state conferences, including the New Jersey Communication Association Conference in spring 2008 and the New Jersey School Counselor’s Association Fall 2008 Conference. At this time I plan to get an internship in the field of Public Relations and/or Advertising, as this is the career path I hope to enter upon graduation.
Networking is a great trait of mine; the places that I would be able to reach out to in developing network contacts include my family and friends. My friend is an HR at Viacom and MTV. I am good friends with the Production and development team at MTV and Nickelodeon; I met them through my interning. I also took advantage of summer job I was a host at the Westmount Country Club; it has allowed me to meet a lot of different people. I also have faith in the professors and advisors from TCNJ, and my old high school that they will be a good networking source.
At the moment I am working as an intern in the Production and Development department at MTV in New York City. I am a senior at The College of New Jersey with a communications major. Since high school I have been revolved around communications and mass media. I am also interested in going for my masters in education, so I can have a back up plan for the future. I am a very driven and dedicated person, who thrives on challenges.
I am fortunate to be a part of the Boys and Girls Club family for 7 years, where I have met tons of people that can help me in the future in different areas of my life. This is my number one networking place. Also, my classmates, professors, and other people on campus provide a wide array of backgrounds and job areas that I am able to learn and benefit from.
I am a Senior Communications major and Professional Writing minor at the College of New Jersey, and graduated in the top 5% of my high school class. I have held a management position at Forever21, Inc. for about two years, as well as in other retail stores and the Boys and Girls Club. I am very dedicated and hard working, and take my responsibilities seriously. I also enjoy writing and working with all kinds of people.
I have many places where I can establish networks that will help me in my inspiring career. One of them is the Bonner Community Scholar’s program. This is where my connection to the non-profit organization world will begin and help me to surround myself with people that have the same passion as a volunteer in the city of Trenton. I can also ingrain networks through my family. An example would be my brother, who is an activist in the city of Trenton and loves the city as well as I do. I also want to begin to search for networks as a volunteer in the U.N and the Peace Corps. This will not only build my connections but also help me experience different horizons in life by traveling.
My name is Kathrine Avila and I am an International Studies major with a concentration in Latin American Studies and a Minor in French and German. I am a Bonner Community Scholar at The College of New Jersey. I volunteer and engage with different partnership and organizations in Trenton with the purpose to make the city a better place. I have come to the college to pursue the career in the U.N preferably an interpreter/translator. My goals are to be a volunteer at the U.N and eventually go into the Peace Corps. I am a very happy, originative, professional and giving person that likes to accomplish her mission.
I've worked in a range of different fields. My networking contacts could be the bosses I've have from these jobs. That is, of course, if the job I am seeking has any relation to a job of had in the past. These networking areas from jobs include: UPS, lifeguarding and ACME supermarkets.
I would like to intern with a radio station. I am now a communications major and I plan to learn the radio business. Admittedly, I do not have experience relevant to this field, which is why I am now at TCNJ, which has a reputable radio program.
I am very fortunate to have family and friends who work in fields that I have greatly considered pursuing. My mom works in a large corporation that is also overseas and has made many connections through working there for around 20 years. My brother and uncle are greatly involved in the government and have many influential friends who I could contact. Also, my personal experience with people through my job (a waitress at a popular bar near where I live) has really helped with networking - business functions and other events take place there where I often start up a conversation and am able to present myself well.
My name is Laura Biondi and I'm a sophomore Marketing major and Communications minor at The College of New Jersey. I have maintained a 3.4 GPA while holding a steady job and participating in a team club sport. I am very personable and have worked in the service industry for 4 years now where I have put my communication skills to practice. I plan on finding an internship in advertising or public relations within the year and hope to earn my masters in Marketing or Finance after I graduate in May 2011.
Developing network contacts is a task I conduct nearly every day before I realized that was what I was doing. I am a naturally friendly person and no matter where I am during the day, I talk to people. My friends find it odd that I strike conversations with people that I meet in line in stores, people that I meet where I work, or I comment to people on something that I heard in a conversation I pass by.
I find that the best places to network is at work. No matter what job I have, I tend to speak to customers, co-workers, or my employers to find out more about them and what interests them or what I could contribute to their conversations. The other areas that I frequently speak to people is at school in between classes, in lines while waiting for something, or when I meet new people while out at the mall.
Other places people could reach out are through clubs, libraries, www.myspace.com, www.livejournal.com, or in community get together events.
"I am a junior at College of New Jersey with a liberal arts degree and majoring in Communication Studies. I plan on working in the Entertainment Industry as my career as an actress. I have five years of experience working as an actress in Six Flags Great Adventure's Fright Fest and as a Looney Toons Character. I have three years of improvisational acting experience through Mystic Realms Limited, an interactive drama troupe. I have also worked as a DJ in Ocean County College for a year and I am training for the radio at College of New Jersey. My goals are to become well rounded in both stage and screen acting to have better opportunities in my career. I look forward to an exciting future and hope you will help me shape it."
I think that my networking skills have greatly improved over time and that I have learned to value the network that I have. I previously felt that asking others for help, and networking in general, was unnecessary. My personal network starts with my family and tight knit group of friends and expands greatly from there. Besides my close friends, I have made many acquaintances through social events that I am sure will one day cover many professional fields. Then I also have former coworkers and bosses, all of whom I have left with a positive impression. On top of that, I have connections through TCNJ and my high school, which has a very active alumni department to assist networking.
I am a 19 year old sophomore at the College of New Jersey looking to become a Communication Studies major. I am currently looking to transfer to another college. I have worked jobs in several different fields, from retail to special needs programs to manual labor on a factory floor with no supervision along with several hundreds of hours of community service. My varied experiences have left me prepared for just about anything a job can throw at me and I hope to find a career within some aspect of the media.
There are many places available to me that would assist me in networking. I can develop good relationships with professors and other important staff members. I can also develop good relationships with seniors who are about to graduate and begin careers in the area that I am looking to pursue. The most reliable and efficient network would be with successful family and friends. Internships and previous jobs that I have had are also efficient networking havens.
I am currently a Sophomore Open Options major that is looking to become a Communications major and Marketing minor. Although I am most likely going to transfer to Rutgers, I have so far been very successful at TCNJ. I had an internship this past summer while also working as an assistant manager at a movie theater, owing to the fact that I am able to handle a lot of responsibility. My dedication and perseverance are the traits that make me eligible for a multitude of jobs and careers.
There are endless numbers of ways to network. For me personally my network consists mainly of professors. I am currently working for one of my professors to implement my Public Relations plan that I created with a group last semester. The plan is to generate more involvement in Health Communication. Because I am working with this professor he has mentioned numerous times that he will help find the perfect graduate school for me. I also became close with another professor after my group met with him many times throughout the semester. We showed him how professional and hardworking we all were. Because of our involvement with him he now sends me e-mails to alert me about certain internships that I may be interested in. Through these professors I can create new networks by contacting them for help with grad schools and internships. The more names they give me, the more I can contact these new people, and even set up informational interviews. Another place where I would like to begin setting up more networks is through internship panels and job fairs. This semester I would like to go to anything that is offered in these two categories and bring a copy of my resume along with a business card. This will help me to get my name out there, and open doors for the future.
I am a junior Communication Studies and Italian Studies double major at The College of New Jersey. I am currently looking for an internship with a Public Relations agency. I can utilize my prior experience from my Public Relations class as well as the Public Relations Plan I completed to help me succeed in this internship. I am currently working with a Professor to implement my plan at my college. I am a very personable and energetic person that works well in small groups. I love to share my ideas as well as to hear ideas from others. I am also extremely persistent. I will not finish a job until it is completed to my best ability and goes above and beyond the satisfaction of my client. I am fluent in both Italian and english and I am willing to travel for the job.
There are plenty of places for myself to network. Besides having many contacts from work, highschool, friends, and family friends. My friends father is the commissioner of the New Jersey lottery and works with the Nets quite often. I already have used this oppertunity to network. Also my friends father works as a high up accountant for MSG. Using both of these sources has led to me having contacts with two teams (the Nets and Knicks) i'd love to work for.
At the time being I am a Junior Business Major. I have internship experience with the New Jersey Nets sales department. I also worked as a batboy for the Somerset Patriots. Clearly, I have had some experience in the field of sports management. I would love to continue in this direction in hopes of one day working full time in the operations department of a professional sports team.
Networking proves to be a vital part in everyones success story. My personal networking experiences stem predominantly from various jobs, schools, friends and family members. Furthermore, volunteer organizations and clubs provide a great meeting place for networking. IT is important to continue contact with your network of individuals and organizations with holiday cards and thank yous for any type of gifts. My recent exprerience of the importance of networking, even though itis not career based is the fact that I was invited to World Series game 3 in Philadelphia by a network contact. I actually just wrote a thank you last night and am ready to mail it out today.
Currently, I am a biology major at TCNJ and work numerous jobs to pay for school and fun. I've been inseveral different field ranging from service to teaching and do have so far done all these tasks fairly well. I plan on pursuing a career in biological sciences or pharmaceuticals because of the opportunities and range of the industry itself. I already have a great network list with a plethora of contacts and hope to accumulate such contacts throughout my life.
Hello, my name is Melvina Fennell and I am a senior Psychology and Women and Gender Studies major attending The College of New Jersey. I come from a small town in south New Jersey, where the high school graduated a little less than 200. While in high school I took part in everything I could in order to secure a seat in college including sports, clubs, honor society, student government, and volunteering. Once in college I used the multi-tasking skills I gained in college to help me play sports, volunteer, intern and maintain a respectable GPA. These experiences coupled with full-time work has given me speaking, interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills, which I will use to develop a career in criminal and civil rights law.
Places that I can reach out for networking is at my place of work, Tmobile, where I meet people of several different occupations. Also, in class I meet people of various, backgrounds, interests, and connections- in the future I may be able to reach out to one of my fellow students who have gone on to attain a position in their field of interest. Also, I can use friends that I have gained while attenting TCNJ and Seton Hall Prelegal Studies, in addition I could network with professors here at TCNJ by keeping in contact with them after the semester is over.
