Speech #2 - Persuasion Critiques

The Speech Critique should focus on the strength of the argument. Be sure to include in your critique comments the depth and degree of evidence used? Did the speech move you to agreement and/or action? Be sure to include examples of the evidence that worked to persuade you. Did you remain unchanged after hearing the argument? Where did the speaker lack especially with the evidence if you remained unchanged?

First, I definitely learned so much from the information this group had, and do now support vouchers because of the information Kathleen provided (since I didn't know anything about it before!). She made eye contact with the audience, and had a nice tone throughout her section.

However, I can't ignore the lack of correct structure that this group had and that the criteria of Kathleen's section of the presentation was not met. Although I feel the research was very relevant and expressed well, I didn't receive the type of information (the benefits) that I was supposed to in order to be persuaded. The information was good, and the slides were good (although a little lengthy..remember 6x6 rule), but it all needed to be better formatted to fulfill the assignment.

Overall, good presentation, nice posture and presence...just needed behind the scenes work :)

Megan V. (Need)
I thought that Megan and her entire group did a great job on their presentation. Personally, I did not know beforehand just how dependent America was on oil and how dependent we have become on foreign countries (including those we are currently in war with).

Megan's delivery of her points were great. I thought she had a very nice tone and rate and spoke in a conversational manner. Especially during the first part of the her speech, she had great eye contact.

As for the content, I definitely was able to follow everything Megan was talking about and agreed with the problems she stated about America's oil consumption. In her first problems she mentions how oil prices have increased not just at the gas pumps but also in the home. It was interesting how she mentioned that families have been forced to keep their heat off for as long as possible because of the high prices.

In Megan's second problem she discussed America's connection to unstable countries due to our country's oil dependency. I think the audience could really connect to this point especially since we are currently in a war with one of the countries our country is getting oil from. She even mentioned that our current president realizes how we need to do something different with the amount of oil the country is using.

Megan's two problems were very clear and could be easily understood. They flowed together very nicely with the rest of her groups presentation. The only thing I would recommend to Megan would be to have a little more eye contact with her second set of problems.

Melissa's section of the persuasive speech was excellent. Her confidence and knowledge reflected each other very well. She did pretty much everything by the book in terms of using citations and keeping the audience interested. I do agree with Professor McManimon that her only fault seemed to be that she showed little emotion or body language.
