Welcome to Communication 240: Business and Government. I am looking forward to a creative and productive semester. I look forward to getting to know each of you and watching you evolve as effective communicators. I really enjoy teaching at TCNJ. I enjoy teaching this class because I teach from a practical perspective, although we will examine some ethical and theoretical dimensions too. It is so satisfying to help so many of you get prepared for your professional careers. We will be examining communication from a number of different directions all in the context of real life in both business and government settings. A few of the many paths that we will explore include investigating how messages are created from the perspective of the sender to how they are received from the perspective of the receiver. The channels used, the effective of culture in the formation of a message and the networks used. We will understand how to effectively communicate in business and examine how messages travel in a business environment whether you the management or subordinate. Additionally, we will focus on the presentational skills needed to give a talk, train an employee or ace a job interview, just to name a few. We will address the message shared in government and politics by using the issues in today's government. Examining the message and learning that making important decisions is more than the charisma but, analyzing the message. We will observe and apply technology and explore how it creates and changes in the message in new and fascinating ways. And, lastly, we will focus on networking and interviewing that occurs in professional settings. Blogging on our class blog will be an important method of capturing our thoughts. We will be using this blog to communicate in many ways in the class, so it is an important class requirement that you visit this blog a few times during the week to keep abreast of assignments and other important class information. We will be using blogs as a means of recording our learning and studies. Every student is required to blog. You can begin by posting your blogs on our class blog post or as the semester evolves, create your own blog. Whatever the case, it is important that you remember that this is an extension of our academic classroom. You must use appropriate grammar, spelling and ideas in all your posts. Also, trying to rush through an assignment or making a weak effort in posting will be evident for all persons to see. Also, be sure to adhere to copyright issues in all posting. Only your originals work(s) whether words or pictures may be used. Please check out the Com 240 links throughout the semester for helpful places needed while in this course. Hello everyone! My name is Danielle-Casey Lourenco and I am a freshman here at TCNJ. I am a communications major and possibly considering a marketing minor. My dream is to work in the field of public relations, so this class is especially important to me in order to achieve my future goals.
Hi, I'm Lindsay Baker and I'm a Junior Chemistry major. I'm in the process of taking prerequisite courses for PharmD programs so that I can apply to a bunch of schools this coming fall. Many pharmacy programs require a course in Public Speaking, so here I am! I can sometimes be very shy, so I'm hoping this class will help me to become more comfortable voicing my thoughts and interests. I also hope this class will give me confidence for the interview portion of pharmacy school applications.
My name is Jennifer and I am a senior Criminology major and Spanish minor. Since this is my last semester here and I have completed all my requirements for graduation, I am currently taking courses outside of my usual discipline that I think would be relevant and useful to me in the future. In the fall I will be attending law school and I know that having more developed public speaking skills would definitely be beneficial to me there. This is the first Communications class I have taken, but I think I will really enjoy it.
Hi everybody ! My name is Victoria Falcone, I am a Sophomore Communication Studies major with a Radio/TV/Film track. I am possibly going to pick up a Journalism minor, because my dream is to get into the Broadcasting field. I am hoping this class will help me speak more clearly and give me confidence in my speaking.
Hi everyone! My name is Caitlin D (one of the 3 Caitlins/Caitlyns) in this class this semester. I’m a senior Communications major and a marketing minor. I really want to work in public relations when I graduate this spring. I feel pretty comfortable speaking in front of people but I took this class in order to make myself as marketable as possible to potential employers. I like to speak in front of people but I still get nervous so I’m hoping to be able to do it more comfortably with the help of this class. I’m looking forward to learning how to be a better public speaker this semester!
Hi everyone! My name is Kyle Magliaro, and I am a sophomore at TCNJ. When not in class or studying I spend most of my time practicing, as I compete for TCNJ's track and field team. Additionally I am a marketing major and I am also active as a Senator-at-Large in our Student Government. This is my first communications course but I find the topic very interesting and look to pick up a communication minor in the near future. This class will only better my abilities to speak and will enhance my confidence when presented with these situations.
Hi. My name is Noelle and I love the color green and giraffes. I am a sophomore here at TCNJ and am currently an Interdisciplinary Business major. I am looking to switch into a marketing specialization because I believe I have the creativity and drive to succeed in that area. I also am working toward a minor in Communication Studies, but haven’t selected what track I would prefer. I have always admired people who can give a strong public speech and I am currently trying to be someone that people “wow” at after I give my concluding words. I imagine myself working with a lot of people in a business whether it’s on a marketing team or being a manager as I hope to accomplish this later in life. Therefore, I want to develop my communication skills to become an effective communicator so people understand what I am saying and enjoy talking to me. One element of public speaking that I have always struggled with is persuading someone that I am the best candidate for a job. It is hard developing that confidence when I know there are at least 30 other people that have applied and I am sure are just as qualified. I am looking to push past that doubt and become assured that I can speak to an employer confidently about my abilities for a position. I most look forward to giving a speech after a lot of practice because I know I know the material and therefore, have the confidence to give a strong delivery. I want to help everyone else improve his or her public speaking skills along with developing my own.
Sincerely,
Noelle
My name is Caitlyn Preciado, and I am a junior Communication Studies major in the Radio/TV/Film track. Besides taking this course because it fit my schedule and did not conflict with my internship, I am also interested in this class because it will help me in my current and future endeavors. Since I love music, I currently work at TCNJ’s radio station, WTSR, as an on-air DJ and one of the Music Directors. Even though I am speaking into a microphone and not seeing my audience, I still have to know what I want to say and how I want to say it before I go on-air in order to have the most intelligible and engaging delivery possible. I want to go into sound and audio production and editing as a career, and having polished public speaking skills will help me to achieve that goal during every step of the process (for internships, graduate school, jobs, etc.).
Hey class,
How’s it going? I’m Josh Buono. I’m an aspiring screenwriter graduating this semester and California-bound soon thereafter. I’ve written, directed, and/or starred in film projects here at TCNJ involving bestiality, necrophilia, pedophilia, and foot fetishes that were all praised as ‘sick but really great’ and given good grades. However, when I wrote a very innocent short story about a middle schooler with a little crush on his English teacher, I was permanently kicked out of my Creative Writing class for it being ‘offensive’ (this is the 'wildest thing I've done' that I can think of.)
My goal is to be nominated for an Oscar before I turn 30. I’m hoping this class will help me impress Hollywood executives I pass in the elevator so I can accomplish that dream. Also I need to get over my fear of public speaking before I make my acceptance speech.
Hey everybody! I'm Alli Wentling, and I'm a freshman here at TCNJ. I am a communications major, and a marketing minor. Also, I work at WTSR as a DJ, and do volunteer work at KidsBridge and Visitation Home, a home for mentally disabled adults. I wanted to take this class because, as a communications major, it is imperative for me to have a presence while speaking, and to possess strong speaking skills. I hope that this class will aid me in honing my speaking ability.
Hey guys! Now that I found this link to this blog... my name is Ellina Sukharenko. I am a Junior Communications major with a Marketing and Management minor. I love the concept of public speaking so I'm taking this class to get more practice. I think this is a skill that can be useful in all careers and generally in all aspects of life. I'm looking forward to getting more comfortable in front of a crowd and being able to convey my thoughts into words more smoothly.
Hi! My name is U-Jin Lee and I'm a sophomore Communications Major and Journalism and Music Minor. Since my dream is to be a reporter and then hopefully an anchor, I figured that this class would greatly benefit me to pursue my aspirations. Also, public speaking, regardless of the occupation, is a great skill necessary for everyone to have since communicating verbally includes speaking or interacting either with small groups of people or even large ones. I hope that this class will be lots of fun since everyone seems to be clear of why they chose to take this!
Hey, I'm Rich Thorne and am currently in my senior year at the College. I am an English and Secondary Education major, so I figured that this class would be a great way to help me work on my presence in front of a group of people as it has been an area where I have struggled in the past, most notably in learning techniques that will allow me to better develop my inflection and voice modulation.
I do a lot of writing and keep a few blogs of my own where I write about film, games, and other interests, the primary being http://processedgrass.wordpress.com, and whatever I find myself doing in the future (I plan on going to Grad School to get at least a Masters next year) I always hope that I am able to continue writing. However, public speaking is such a valuable skill that I know what I take away from my time in this class is going to be just as practical, if not more so, than the other skills that I can bring to a work environment. Look forward to a great and fulfilling semester!
Hi everyone! My name is Whitney Lewis and I am a junior communications major with a double minor in management and deaf studies. I am interested in many different topics within communications and have had past internships within radio, tv, and public relations. While I am still undecided about my future, I find that this class I'll help me no matter where I go in life. I hope to improve upon calming my nerves, talking slowly, and eliminating filler words when speaking in front of others.
Hi everyone! My name is Gretchen Conway and I am a sophomore. I am a Psychology major and a Communication Studies minor. My main reason for taking this class (other than counting it towards my minor) is that I wanted to challenge myself. While many people are taking this class to “tune-up” their public speaking skills, I am taking it to learn how to have them in the first place. I definitely do not consider myself a strong public speaker, but I do believe that being a strong public speaker is essential to having a successful career. Since I plan on being successful, I must work on my public speaking skills. I am looking forward to the challenge, even though I am extremely nervous for the 700 points of our grade that are based on our speeches!
Hi everyone. my name is Caitlin, but I go by Cait. I'm a philosophy major and I'm going to add a Law and Society concentration next semester. I hope to go to law school in the south, either Duke or UVA, and eventually become a prosecutor. I'm taking this class because I think it's good preparation for being a prosecutor and I hope that it helps me learn to get my points across efficiently.
Hi, My name is Jen Lombardi and it is my second year here at TCNJ. I am a communications major with a track in radio/tv/film and a minor in Spanish. The truth is I have no idea what I want to do after graduation I just hope I am happy with whatever career I end up in. Nonetheless, public speaking is an important skill to have in any business setting. Moreover, public speaking teaches us to effectively think on our feet. This skill can come in handy in any situation in conflicts or conversations. There are countless times when I walk away from a conversation and I think of the best comeback or the best line to say after the fact. Hopefully this class can fix that!
Hello everybody, Kyle Tomalin here. I am in the process of becoming a Sociology major here, specializing in Health and Environment. I am also a Public/Mass Communications minor. The way I look at it is that I want the titles of my academic to be mouthfuls. I am a sophomore, still in shock that I am almost halfway done with college. My future job ambitions are to work in the health industry, hopefully something with public health advocacy. My actual aspirations are to become a creative mind behind great cinema or cinema criticism, but considering the current economy, one must put dollar over heart. I am taking this Public Speaking course both as a minor requirement, and also to learn how to speak better. I have had lifelong issues with speech fluency, though I have gotten over most of them in private, my public voice is still privy to choke up on monosyllabic sounds. So I hope to learn a great deal this semester!
Hi. I am Theresa Genthe and I am a sophomore Political Science major and Journalism minor. I am taking this course because I believe it teaches tools that are necessary not only for my future career success but for life in general. This is a course that everyone, no matter the background and regardless of what field of academics they choose to study can take something substantial away from it.
Hey everyone, my name's Andrea Jacome I am a sophomore communications major at TCNJ. I had trouble finding this blog and did it wrong but I got it now! So I’m on the Radio/TV/Film track and I’ve always wanted to do some type of broadcast journalism and I believe I found my niche in sports broadcasting, however, I am also interested in a career as a publicist. Either way I believe this course will help me in anything I want to do in the future. Ideally, I’d like to live in New York, in the heart of the city, because I feel that that is where I need to be for what I want to do but if I end up having a shot somewhere in the mid-west or somewhere with a lot of snow which I despise, than I guess I’ll have to compromise.
